The Club was deeply saddened to hear the news that Neil Garner has passed away after a long and brave battle with cancer.
As Gerry Mills remembers below, Neil had a passion for football and became involved with the cricket club through Swans Football Club who played at the ground for many years.
Outside of sport, Neil and Maureen were involved with scouting.
Gerry Mills remembers:
We first met Maureen, Neil, Susan and David when they moved to Hag Hill Rise in Taplow, two doors down from us in the 1970’s. We immediately became friends; they were easy to get on with – a northern trait! Neil was an avid supporter of Wigan Athletic F.C. and “football mad”. It was not long until we roped him into joining Swans F.C. He was an uncompromising defender.
Over the next few decades he was a prominent member of Swans and worked tirelessly on the Committee and, with Maureen, supported the many social functions at the Cricket Club. Their input on the colts’ annual fun day, raising funds for the club, could always be counted on. Neil also took on the role as Treasurer of the Cricket Club and gave up his time doing many electrical jobs in the clubhouse.
Neil was a great friend and drinking buddy (he loved his pint). The Lancashire lad will be sorely missed by everyone who was fortunate to know him.
